An Abandoned Dog in Mexico Needs Your HelpOne of the advantages of being a writer is the possibility to effect change when something terrible is going down somewhere. You do not always get the change you are shooting for and sometimes tragedy happens anyway.Living in Mexico all these years, I have discovered if there is one stereotype that is commonly heard about Mexicans it is how they treat their animals, especially their dogs and cats. This, unfortunately, is not a false stereotype. We have personally witnessed this all too often here where we live in Guanajuato. This is the capital of the state of Guanajuato.Although the condition of animals has actually improved since we've been here, we still come across the most horrible incidents. We had some neighbors, professionals with university degrees, who thought it a responsible act to lock their six cats in their house when they moved. Here were these starving cats in this vacant house, howling horribly. Some workers let the poor things out.I have been told that the reasoning is "Oh, someone will take them in. ".On our street, there is a vacant house. Someone has locked a female yellow lab in the yard with no food or water. The thing is starved. My wife and I just ran down to a store, in the rain, bought some dog kibble, and fed and watered the poor baby.I think it is high time that I started using my column for something other than selling books. If you want to help, you can do something. It won't cost you a dime. Write the Mexican tourism office at:.contact@visitmexico.com.or.http://www. guanajuato-travel.com/v1/contacto.html. and tell them that in the city of Guanajuato, in the Barrio Pastita, on the street, Privada de los Frayles, in a big yellow ABANDONED house, there is a sweet dog that is going to die if they do not send someone out there to rescue it.Make sure you tell them that if the columnist, Doug Bower, writes and informs his readers that this dog died because of this cruel act of abandonment, that you will think twice about buying Mexican Products or ever stepping foot in Mexico as a tourist and spending your American dollars.Do not worry about Spanish, just write your e-mail in English. And, too, let me say that not all Mexican are this cruel to their dogs. We do know plenty of responsible pet owners here. But, sadly, this is not the case with the majority..And, if you would like, send me any responses so I might use them in a future column.I will keep you informed!. .Have you tried to learn Spanish, or any foreign language and failed. Are you like the thousands of Americans who took years of foreign language study and cannot string two words together in the target language?
